Keep it square or at right angles !!! For the novice and intermediate turners, start off with a square block approx. 8" by 8" with max. depth of 3" and turn a round bowl inside but maintain at least a portion of the square corners of the original block. (i.e. to play fair, don’t start with a round bowl and cut it square on a band saw or with a sander). Typically this is referred to as a square bowl. It is harder to put into words than to see a picture, but if you need additional information, ask someone. You may glue pieces of wood together to get to the block form specified. Have fun! For the advanced turners, I’m going to give you an additional 1" of depth to work with, i.e. 8" by 8" by 4". No it is not because I’ve already got something glued up with those dimensions, but I’d like to see your Clewes type lidded box.) I know we have lots of advanced turners in this club. I challenge you to show our newer members what this club is really capable of turning if we put our showing the world what can be done, that encourages the newer members to strive to be better. I’d like to see at least 10 entries in this category! Besides, since we don’t meet in November, this will be the last President’s Challenge for the year. Let’s make a good showing!!!!

We will be doing a few other things at the Ice Cream Social Meeting in July besides eating ice cream. One of which will be the President’s July Challenge of making an ice cream cone to scale try to duplicate it out of wood on your lathe. Embellish it with lines, etc. to the best of your ability, and let the membership judge your creation. If you wish to simulate some ice cream in your cone, that’s okay. See what we can come up with. Appropriate prizes will be given, available. Never can tell, you might win all the melted ice cream we have left over!!!!!

March 2009
Here we are, barely 1 month into winter and what am I thinking about? Springtime in March. Yes, I’m going to give you a couple months of advance notice on the next challenge. And for springtime, what is more exciting then talking about the birds and the bees!!! Now you have to be real careful if you try to turn a bee around, and we know we’d rather turn the chicken on the rotisserie, so that leaves me with what came either before or after the chicken, which by my thinking, it must be the egg. Yes the next challenge will be to turn an egg, and as practice makes perfect, let’s see how many eggs we can turn that will fit inside the largest egg, with the consecutive eggs fitting inside the previously turned egg. The last turned egg can be solid, otherwise the eggs need to be in box form. The maximum egg size must be within the confines of a rectangular cube shape of 2 inches by 2 inches by 2.75 inches. Yes, I measured some chicken eggs to come up with those numbers and ratio. As usual 3 categories of competition, but in this case most eggs within the confines noted wins as long as they fit inside the next larger egg. Have fun, and if you wish, you may color or decorate your eggs. And no scrambled eggs allowed.
