PRESIDENT'S NOTES

Two months have passed and quite a bit has been accomplished. We have our two Jet Mini Lathes with all accessories ready to go!

Our educational grant request has been approved in the amount of $731.25. It is going to help a lot in our educational program.

Our first chance to try them out is at the Woodworking Show at Cal Expo on April 25th to 27th. We need everyone to help in the booth for the three days. We need you to demo on the lathes also (AAW members only), so please sign up at the next meeting.

Do you like the changes in our meetings? Let us know!

Don’t miss Trent Bosch coming to my shop on March 21st and repeated on March 22nd. I guarantee you will enjoy and learn from him.

Would you enjoy small hands on sessions in my shop on a variety of subjects on Saturdays?

If any of you know of a good location for a Nor-Cal Club Picnic this fall, let us know.

We have received a letter of thanks and appreciation from Modesto J.C. Gallery Director, Val Lee, for all the wonderful turnings which made the show a great success.

Announcements

1. This is the last time I’ll mention dues! If your dues are not paid by the end of this month, this will be your last newsletter. Since it is sometimes hard to remember whether or not you have paid, please check your address label. If there is a red dot, we have not received your dues. If you have paid and there is a red dot, please see Barney. Dues are $30 per member per year and $10 per year for a spouse should they desire to be members. Moneys may be sent to Barney Oldfield, 11170 Meadow Brook Drive, Auburn, CA 95602 or paid at the meeting. Please include the membership application that was sent to you. This form is important, as it insures the new roster will be correct. Also be sure to check whether or not you are an AAW member.

2. Commercial membership is also available for $50. This includes a business card sized ad in the Newsletter for one year. The ad may be changed at any time. Contact Barney Oldfield.

3. Don’t forget the members only Swap & Sell table. Please unload your vehicles from the parking circle by the door, then move your vehicle to the street so others have room to unload.

4. Be sure to check out our web site at www.norcalwoodturners.org. Mike Cox has done a terrific job on it as our new Web Master. Mike has posted all the pictures taken at the meeting - in color - so take a look and view your beautiful turnings!

5. Leanne Pierson gave the first book review on the new Library book the Club recently purchased. Let Rollie know if you would like to participate in the book reviews.

6. Kirk requested interested members to bring in a small item that does not take very long to turn and would be easy to make during a demonstration process at shows and schools. If you are one of these volunteers, please bring in your item to the March meeting with a brief description and time required to complete it. We are gearing up for our new Educational Program which will debut at the April Woodworking Show at Cal Expo. The idea of the program is to have at least two people turning on the lathes and a third person explaining what is being done. This will allow the turners to keep working. The turned items will then be given to someone in the viewing audience at the show.

7. Woodcraft receipts may be turned in to Barney Oldfield (Treasurer) at the meetings. The receipts should be no more than 6 months old. Woodcraft gives us a 3% rebate on these receipts which the club uses to purchase raffle items, books, etc. from Woodcraft.

8. Bill Flewelling is the one to see if you need Greenwood sealer. The sealer comes in 5 gallon containers and costs $32. Contact Bill at 530-753-2664 to make arrangements for your purchase.

9. Our expedited raffle distribution worked very well at the February meeting! Those who participated were able to view all the drawn numbers on a white board. If you didn’t win, you didn’t have to stick around waiting for numbers to be called! This is a big timesaver and we will continue with this practice. Get your tickets early!

10. Dick Lambert will be taking sign-ups to work at the Cal Expo Woodworking Show, April 25 - 27. We will need several people for each shift. Shifts will last from 2 to 4 hours.

We had a GREAT Show and Tell Table at the January meeting! Thanks to everyone for participating.

Our speaker for the evening was allowed a maximum amount of time for his presentation, so we did not have a Show and Tell. However, pictures were taken of items on the table. The last picture is of a platter that was not signed and no information on the signup sheet and I have no clue who turned it. Sorry! All items received a lot of attention during the break. Very nice work, everyone!

Sonja Lemon.JPG Sonja Lemon turned this small Mahogany bowl.

Barry Hanna 3.JPG Barry Hanna turned several items: This beautiful Mesquite bowl, a Pear platter, Olive bowl, and Olive vase.

Mets lerwill.JPG Mets Lerwill turned these nice vessels: One of Camphor and one of Pistachio.
Steve Reed.JPG Steve Reed did a very nice job on this Sycamore and Walnut birdhouse.

Bill Flewelling 5.JPG Bill Flewelling brought in this interesting piece, a ball in a container. He also brought in a natural edge Cork oak bowl, a ‘holey’ vessel, cube in cube, star in cube, and some lattice work.

Dan Clark.JPG Dan Clark brought in a very nice salad bowl set.

Ken Martin.JPG Ken Martin turned this very nice bowl.
Herb Medsger 1.JPG Herb Medsger turned this Pin Oak bowl and a mini vessel of Tagua nut.

Glenn Robison.JPG Glenn Robisonturned this lovely Maple bowl with raffia lacing and beads.
Chuck Quibell 2.JPG Chuck Quibell, our guest speaker for the evening, turned this lovely Madrone bowl and a second Camphor bowl.

Thanks to all who brought in their turnings! Everyone enjoyed them.

FEB. PROGRAM RECAP

Chuck Quibell’s topic was Wood Through the Eyes of a Wood Anatomist, a subject he is very well versed in. He had a number of charts for reference and presented us with an introduction to wood. He explained the cellular structure of woods and other plants and explained the characteristics of tissue and how it holds plants together. He explained the difference between plants that produce only primary tissues (herbacious) and those that produce secondary tissues (wood).

He talked about how the walls of cells grow, long, narrow, thick, thin, and how these walls relate to the different trees. He explained that one way to identify softwood (conifers, etc) was to study the cell structure which grows on a vertical plane. Hardwoods, on the other hand, have an intertwining cell structure which creates the figured grain patterns.

The second half of his program was slides of cell patterns and he explained these. Part of his explanation was about how wood gets its fiddle back, curley, ribbon, and other textures.

There were many questions asked and answered at the end of the program.

Thank you, Chuck, for a most informatiive the program.
