March Program Recap

Our team of mentors presented a program at the March meeting. Each Mentor was given the opportunity to explain the type of turning they do and how they go about instructing others.

Bob Adam, Chairman, gave an overview of the program and explained the signup sheet which is available at the meetings for those wishing help. He showed several pieces of segmented work he has done, as well as boxes, etc.

Bill Flewelling is always available to help with turning, just call. We all know Bill does some fantastic natural edge turnings and has recently started cube turnings!

Herb Medsger has been turning a long time. His specialty is design and a variety of finishes, lacquer, sand blasting, wire brushing, lacings, closed vessels, and more. He showed several of his pieces and explained how he achieved the designs.

Charles Brownold asked “What do you want to learn?” This is important to get the most from the Mentor sessions. He recommends you bring your own wood and tools. He will teach you the difference between sharp and dull tools and give you practice with vacuum chucking. Let your mentors know if you want general or specific instruction.

Leonard Klima will instruct you in the use of lacquer and epoxy finishes, and working with stains, and coloring woods. You can also learn how to make tool handles, use hose clamps, etc.

Tom Castaldo is the newest member of the Mentor group. He has been a club member for 5 1/2 years. He recommends you take advantage of all Mentors. You will learn something different for each of them. His favorite turnings are natural edge and he showed samples . He will talk to you about form and wood relationship.

We hope everyone will take advantage of the opportunity to learn something new by contacting the Mentors for instructions! Thanks for a most informative program!

Please welcome the following new member

Announcements

Don't forget, we will have a members only Swap & Sell table at the meeting. Unload vehicles from the parking circle by the door, then move your vehicle to the street so others have room to unload.

If you would like to preview a new book purchase before it is open to the membership, contact Rollie Bowns, Librarian. The member is asked to make one item from the book and/or explain it at the General Meeting. After this time, the book or video will be placed in the Library.

Bill Flewelling has Greenwood Sealer for those in need of some. The sealer comes in 5 gallon containers and costs $32. Contact Bill at 530-753-2664 to make arrangements for your purchase.

Be sure to get your raffle tickets early during the meeting. Tickets are drawn during the Show and Tell portion of the meeting and posted on a board. This saves time for all and allows those without winning tickets to leave sooner.

CA glue is available at the meetings for those needing to replenish their supply. See Rollie.

The MultiClub picnic will be held at Vasona Park in Los Gatos this year on June 1st. This will be potluck (bring your own meat if you want). More information later, but reserve the date!

If you have information regarding woodturning events that you would like in the Newsletter, please send the information to Sonja. Also send in your tips and suggestions or articles on turning.

Members' Gallery

Ron Winterton.JPG Ron Winterton showed three bowls - 2 Locust and 1 Almond.

Barry Hanna - Holey chosed vessel.JPG Barry Hanna showed 3 very interesting pieces. The first was an Olive vase which started out as a 15 lb piece of Olive root with many voids. He glued it together, then held it together with strapping tape while he turned it. He also turned a Redwood bowl and a camphor plate with penciled details.

Walnut Bowl - Friederich.JPG Barney Oldfield showed a vase, English Walnut bowl, and a natural edge Redwood plate.

Ray Jensen - 5 pieces.JPG Ray Jensen showed 2 bowls turned from colored plywood, 1 bowl of Dark Oak with a beeswax finish, a Lingnum Vitae goblet, and a box.

Dan Clark - Redwood Bowl.JPG Dan Clark showed a Redwood Burl bowl which was highly polished using the Beal system.

Will Michaud showed a Black Oak bowl with a rolled edge. (Sorry, no picture)

Phil Sargent - Camphor Goblet.JPG Phil Sargent showed a Sycamore burl goblet. It has a light pinkish color and was tuned wet.

Friederich - Fern Vase.JPG Bruce Friederich showed 2 Walnut pieces, a large natural edged end grain English Walnut bowl, and a large crotch English Walnut platter. He also showed a very nice Mesquite vessel which has some filled cracks in it. He had a friend go on line to get pictures of Mesquite stems and leaves and copied them over the cracks for a most interesting effect!

Mar 03 Rock & Roll.jpg
Mar 03 African ZigZag.jpg Malcolm Tibbetts showed 2 of his more recent pieces. The first African Zig Zag, is a tall vase. He explained the different generations of laminations used to create this piece. Each generation getting more complicated as it is cut and glued together. The second piece is titled Rock N Roll and is approximately 2 ft in diameter. Each ring is about 18+ inches. The checkered ring is made of wedged circles; the other ring is finish turned both inside and out as 2 halves, then assembled and finished. The checkered ring was inserted through the other ring, then glued closed. All grain follows the same direction in each circle. When the rings are held upright and released, they will rock N roll for about 20 minutes before coming to a stop!

Sullivan - pepper mill.jpg Peggy Sullivan showed a Cocobolo pepper grinder.

John Hale - Modesto Ash.JPG John Hale's friend showed up with a piece of wood for him. It turned out to be a 2” thick round of Modesto Ash. John was able to turn a small bowl from the wood!

Flewelling & Klima.JPG Bill Flewelling showed a variety of different items he has been turning. Several miniature closed vessels, an Almond cube on a spalted Maple stand, a Walnut Singapore ball with Almond spikes, an offset box, and an open Cork Oak bowl.

Leonard Klima turned the Ebony and Olive shakers in the above picture. They are finished with epoxy.

Gerardis - Pine Bowl.JPG Marc Gerardis showed a Walnut box with finial and a Pine bowl.

Bob Hosea - 3 pieces.JPG Bob Hosea showed a small Oak vase he dyed black using a vinegar and steel wool rinse. It was a small piece of burl full of bug holed which he filled, finished, and polished. The second piece was a small 1” tall mini vase turned from a scrap of dymondwood. (the box in the picture was turned by Marc)

Kirk Stubbs.JPG Kirk Stubbs showed Myrtle egg, ball, and bowl together and a very interesting Maple spider vase with carved legs.

Ron Winterton.JPG Ron Winterton showed three bowls-2 Locust and 1 Almond.

My apologies if I have the wrong pictures with the comments. It is getting increasingly hard to remember who turned what when there are no identifying marks on the items as pictures are taken! Even a piece of masking tape with your name and wood used would help immensely! We want to do justice to your work, please help us. Thank you. Sonja

HELP IS ON THE WAY……

. The Mentors group has been founded to assist our membership with improving their turning skills. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced turner, everyone needs help with a project or instruction on the use of a new tool. Beginners especially need to learn what tools to use and how to use them in a safe and efficient manor. They need to learn how to chuck the turning on the lathe, how to turn it and finish it. The Mentor group is available to help. Call any mentor regarding your needs and a scheduled hands-on session will be arranged. This is a service for club members free of charge. If you have a special need, a match will be made with the mentor best qualified for that need. Working with different mentors can also help a turner to realize that there are many approaches to accomplish a task. We all sharpen our tools a little differently and have our favorite tools and techniques to accomplish the same end result. This is the art of turning. Working with a mentor can thus be a rewarding experience. All the mentors are well qualified turners with a vast array of experience.

A signup table attended by the mentors will be set up toward the end of each club meeting. Take advantage of this opportunity.
