Two Day Workshop
Class Description –
This demonstration and class offer an exploration of embellishment techniques for turned or sculpted forms. We will show how to build a solid foundation in design fundamentals while exploring a variety of decorative possibilities through carving, texturing, pyrography, coloring, and finishing.
In the class, with guidance from Graeme and Melissa, students experiment with new techniques, gaining confidence and refining their skills on practice boards before moving on to their own turnings brought from home.
Instruction covers strategies for drawing on diverse influences, generating personal design ideas, and selecting and preparing wood for carving and embellishment. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants can learn power carving, woodburning, making and using various woodburner tips, as well as the application of acrylic and milk paints, paste waxes, and other finishing options.
During class Graeme and Melissa provide morning and afternoon demonstrations with plenty of open studio time throughout the day for individual experimentation. Additional demonstrations are offered as needed, ensuring everyone has support to develop their own distinctive approach. Tool selection, sharpening, and safety are emphasized throughout the class.
We recommend starting with small test boards to learn and practice on before going to a 3 dimensional piece, and suggest bringing a few small practice pieces to play on, bowls, vessels, spheres, eggs etc NOTE- Please do not bring pieces with any finish on as it is very stinky to carve/burn through.

Registration is $ 310 for Nor-Cal Members and includes two full days, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Sunday February 15 and Monday February 16th. You should also consider coming to the Sunday demonstration before the workshop. Click here to register for the demo on Saturday, February 14th ($25).
We'll meet at Brian Benson's shop at 40152 County Rd 27, Woodland CA (just north of Davis) Please bring your own chair and lunch (there are no facilities nearby).
